A Nominal Target and an Acceptance Range Are Different Requirements

A single target value does not explain how a finished product will be reviewed. Clarify the intended characteristic and acceptance method without inventing a tolerance to complete the drawing.

ASQ's quality-planning guidance links planned controls and criteria with the requirements to be met. ASQ — quality plans.

Define the characteristic first

For a soft-product proposal, state exactly what would be measured and how the item is positioned. Keep the nominal target separate from any proposed acceptance limits. Do not copy a range from a product with a different construction or purpose.

Resolve the review method

Ask the responsible technical and quality reviewers what evidence and method are appropriate. Preserve units and conditions with the decision. A neat dimension line on a concept drawing is not a completed measurement agreement.

The practical deliverable is a requirement that another person can apply consistently. It should explain what the number means and how it will be assessed, rather than rely on a shared assumption that “approximately” means the same thing to everyone.
