The label knitted fabric covers more than one construction approach. A sourcing discussion becomes clearer when the actual family and material are identified.
CottonWorks distinguishes warp and weft knitting in its introductory guidance. CottonWorks — Knit Basics.
Avoid category shortcuts
For a character fabric, obtain the supplier's actual construction information. Do not infer an appropriate application merely from the knitting-family name or a similar-looking material already in the archive.

Keep the requirement visible
Compare the proposed material with the relevant appearance, handling and assembly requirements. The construction family is useful background, while the actual finished textile supplies the evidence for the decision. Record which material was evaluated so a broad category name does not later authorise unrestricted substitutions.
