Generating an Image and Classifying a Defect Are Different AI Tasks

A tool that produces convincing pictures is not automatically suitable for checking a production photograph. Define the task before selecting the AI approach.

Google's machine-learning introduction distinguishes tasks such as prediction and classification from generative uses of AI. Google — Introduction to Machine Learning.

Write the required output

For an illustrative quality project, the desired output might be a flag for human review, not a newly generated product image. For concept development, the output may be a proposal to discuss rather than a measurement. Those outputs require different data and different checks.

Judge the result against the task

A visually attractive image tells little about defect-detection performance. A classifier's category label tells little about creative usefulness. Build an evaluation set that represents the actual intended work and keep the decision owner visible.

The first practical step is a task statement with an input, expected output and review method. It prevents a broad request to “use AI” from hiding several unrelated problems inside one technology purchase or pilot.
