Agreeing Plush Dimensions: Record the Review Method as Well as the Target

A target dimension is more useful when the buyer and supplier also agree how it will be measured and how differences will be reviewed. Avoid applying a generic tolerance to every plush shape. Establish the requirement for the particular design and order.

Define the important measurement

For the Starfruit, width across the points may matter as much as height. For a seated animal, overall height and body depth might be the critical pair. Mark the measurement points on the reference image and state the product's position during measurement.

Separate a design preference from a fixed packaging constraint. “Around this size” and “must fit this inner box” lead to different discussions.

Ask for an agreed range

Do not copy a number from another product's specification without checking whether it applies. Discuss the target and proposed acceptance range with the supplier. Record the unit, measurement method and review sample. If the supplier proposes a different method, resolve it before the order specification is finalised.

This article does not set a universal production tolerance; that needs to be agreed for the specific item.

Compare later samples consistently

Use the same points and resting position for every comparison. If a revision changes the shape, reconsider whether the original measurement still describes the feature you care about. Keep the ruler photograph with the sample record so a new reviewer can repeat the check.

What if the product fits the measurements but looks wrong?

Review appearance separately. Dimensions do not capture facial position, silhouette or colour balance. A measurement check and a visual sample review should support each other rather than substitute for one another.

Send a marked drawing and any packaging constraint with your product enquiry.
